Microsoft earlier this week rolled out new cumulative updates to fix the security and non-security bugs in all versions of Windows 10 operating system,
. According to Microsoft’s forum discussions, Windows 10 KB4074588 is causing error 0x80070bc2 and 0x80070422 on some computers, and the update ultimately fails to install.
This update is only for systems running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709). It is also one of the updates shipped by Microsoft on Patch Tuesday. It’s worth noting that the issue is not widespread at the time of writing this story. Only a small number of Windows 10 devices might encounter error 0x80070bc2 or 0x80070422 when attempting to install the cumulative update.

While the January 2018 update was a nightmare for many users, these bugs aren’t as widespread as they’ve been in past. It’s likely that Microsoft is already aware of Windows 10 KB4074588 error 0x80070bc2 and error 0x80070422. More info would be released soon as all users will install the update in the coming hours.
Microsoft only acknowledges bugs when it’s widespread, but you can expect the fix for this error in March 2018 update. Microsoft on the support page says that Windows 10 Build 16299.248 has just two known issues that would not affect the user experience or show any aforementioned error. One of the known issues in this build is with Windows Update where the system will incorrectly report that the update has failed to install.
We are not aware of any solution to fix 0x80070bc2 or 0x80070422 on Windows 10. We will, however, continue monitoring the forums and keep you posted about the issues with Windows 10 cumulative update KB4074588.
As far as the security improvements are concerned, Microsoft is patching Scripting Engine, Microsoft Edge browser, Device Guard, and the Windows Kernel with February update. Since these updates include security fixes, we recommend users to install them as possible. If you would like to manually upgrade your system, you can do so by downloading the offline installer of this update.

I’m getting error 0x80246010 when installing this update.
I was getting a different error but after running the Update diags and fix it now has this error.
After this I am sure other people are getting errors and maybe even different errors.
@Allan The same error for me. I have a Hp laptop with AMD 10 CPU. Does your pc’s have AMD or Intel CPU’s?
I fixed it by doing a system restore to the February 7 update. It worked and then it installed properly.
Go to MS and download the update for your architecture.
Copy the MSU to the root directory of your system drive (usually C:)
Rename the copied file something easy like Febupdate.msu
type C:Febupdate.msu or whatever you chose to name it
Once rebooted go to system and check your version now ends with .288
Delete the file you put in the root directory, you no longer need it

I just started experiencing this issue, super frustrating. Cannot find a fix anywhere.
I recently purchased brand new laptop and loaded office 365 and noticed that Outlook and Word always show update available. I then went to settings and looked at Windows Updates and saw that they had failed. It was not my firewall or any of the other lame answers I saw about this same problem like doing clean boot, editing registry, etc. However, I did turn off my network Metering as was suggested.
When I looked at users I showed as Local Administrator, however, I followed instructions to run command prompt as an administrator.Type cmd then right click on the match for Command Prompt – select Run as Administrator. Click on the command prompt and type: net user administrator /active:yesThis should now show as successful.
If successful go to updates and try running again. I was finally successful in updating2018-4 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64 based Systems (KB409 3112) When I opened Outlook it still showed that an update was available so I ran the update and it was successful and the message about Updates Available finally went away.
