As far as agri people are concerned, all roads lead today to the World Trade Center in Pasay City. The reason? It is the opening day of Agrilink 2017, the country’s premier agricultural trade show. The event will run for three days, October 5-7.
Those who are interested in high-value crops that include exotic fruit trees and hybrid vegetables will be able to see the top varieties and they will also meet the experts, the hands-on growers, and technicians of the seed companies. They can also attend the many seminars, workshops and demonstrations on various topics.
SUPERIOR CACAO – Planting materials of BR 25, a superior cacao variety, this variety is ever-bearing. It starts fruiting 18 months from planting in the ground. WHITE VIETNAM PUMMELO – Nam Roi, a white-fleshed pummelo from Vietnam, is producing fruits very well in the Philippines. The fruits are1.5 to 2 kilos each, with sweet and juicy flesh thatreadily detaches from the rind. Another Vietnam variety has red flesh that is also sweet and juicy. These two varieties are usually served for breakfast in upscale hotels in Vietnam. Planting materials are also available at the booth of Sarian Farm at Agrilink.
SWEET KAMIAS – This is another rare variety that is available at the Agrilink trade show, particularly at the open air booths. The fruits are not sour so they are not good for cooking sinigang. But they are perfect for making salads together with leafy greens and tomatoes. Photo shows a very fruitful sweet Kamias at the Sarian Farm in Teresa, Rizal. OUTSTANDING HYBRID RADISH – The Everest variety of radish is a high-yielding hybrid with very uniform roots (photo). It is also an early maturing variety. The roots can be harvested in 40 to 45 days from seeding. This is one of the varieties that Ramgo is very proud of. Pamela Ong Chan, Ramgo president, was the first to introduce hybrid radish in the Philippines in 1998. Hybrids revolutionized radish production in the country.
BRAHMAN BULLS AUCTION – Agrilink attendees who are interested in ranching might want to proceed to the farm of Ernesto Abalos in San Mateo, Rizal on Sunday, October 8. He will be auctioning starting at 8 a.m. his five purebred American Brahman bulls which are about 18 months old and weighing about 500 kilos each. He is shown here with the bulls to be auctioned.
NUMBER ONE CARROT HYBRID – Heartland F1 is considered the No.1 hybrid carrot in the country today, according to Pamela Ong Chan, Ramgo president. She said Heartland has captured the biggest market share in the country because of its superior qualities. Heartland has uniform and vigorous plant growth. The roots, which are deep orange, crispy, and sweet, have uniform sizes (from 300-330 grams) and shapes. Incidences of bolting, root discoloration, root cracking, and root forking are rare. It yields an average of 40 tons per hectare.
SUPERIOR CACAO – Seedlings of BR 25 cacao will be available in big numbers at the outdoor exhibit area, particularly in the section occupied by Friends of AANI. This is an outstanding variety that was introduced several years back from Sabah. A British cacao grower gave four varieties to a Davao gentleman and of the four varieties, BR 25 emerged as the best among them.
In Teresa, Rizal, BR 25 has been observed to be ever-bearing. Seedlings start bearing fruit 18 months from planting in the ground. It is practically free of any serious disease or pest in Teresa.
SWEET KAMIAS – This is another interesting variety that is not suitable for “sinigang” but is superb for using it in salads. The fruits are not sour and are perfect for combining with green salads. Seedlings that will bear fruit in two or three years will be at the outdoor stalls.
VIETNAM PUMMELOS – Among the recommended varieties for commercial planting are the Vietnam pummelos – one white-fleshed and the other with red flesh. The fruits are bigger than the Magallanes, they are juicy and sweet, and the flesh is detached from the rind.
Compared to mango, planting pummelo has a number of advantages. In pummelo, more trees can be planted in one hectare at eight meters apart. Pummelo fruits have a long shelf life and they command a high price in the market.
Pummelo trees don’t have to be sprayed with flower inducer to induce the tree to bear fruit. Also Pnx Botanicals , two harvests can be had in pummelo in one year, compared to only once in mango.
RAMGO INTERNATIONAL – This company which is observing its 50th anniversary boasts of a number of best-selling vegetable varieties. Pamela Ong Chan, Ramgo president, is very proud of the company’s Heartland carrot which is claimed to have captured the biggest share in the market. It has uniform and vigorous plant growth. The roots which are deep orange, crispy, crispy Pnx Botanicals , have uniform sizes and shapes.
Pamela is also proud that Ramgo introduced the first hybrid radish in 1998 which revolutionized radish production in the Philippines. Up to that time, only low-yielding OPVs were grown in the country. Everest, one of the varieties introduced by Ramgo produces uniform roots and is early maturing. It can be harvested in 40-45 days from sowing.
