Dave Hughes, the Republican hoping to wrest away DFLer Collin Peterson's long-held seat in the U.S. House, is trying to convince President Trump to hold a rally in the western Minnesota 7th District.
"I think if he comes to western Minnesota, I will win by double digits," Hughes said Thursday. "There were 33,500 people who voted for Trump who had never voted before."
Hughes lost to Peterson by just 5 percentage points two years ago, when Trump's red wave swept the state, and he hopes to complete the mission this year.
Hughes, 49, retired as a major in the Air Force in 2014 and now works for General Atomics as a drone instructor pilot, flying operational missions on both borders and training US Customs and Border Patrol aircrews.
As a deficit hawk, he said his stomach dropped "when I saw the first trillion dollar deficit under Obama."
His stomach isn't exactly celebrating the trillion dollar deficit now projected by the Trump Administration's Office of Management and Budget.
"The Republicans in Congress right now need to get their act together," he said. But he nonetheless strongly supports the recent big tax cuts, which he believes will light up the economy and allow the country to grow its way out of those deficits.
He doesn't believe the Congressional Budget Office projections of a brief flare up in growth followed by sputtering annual growth in the gross domestic product. "The CBO is wrong," he said.
In fact, he doesn't agree with the Keynesian economic theory that government should spend more during a depression or recession to stimulate the economy when business and consumers spending drops off.
He believes in Art Laffer's economic theories and the supply side economics of tax cuts and spending cuts popular in the Reagan Administration.
He and his wife, Amanda, live in Karlstad with their seven children, ages 2 to 14, including an orphan adopted from China. The Bible calls on people to "minister to widows and orphans," he said, "and what better way than to adopt an orphan?" They are both busy, as she homeschools the children and also serves as his campaign director. She's doing a great job at both — his campaign is on fire and his kids are testing well above grade level, he said.
Hughes says he believes Collin Peterson is a bad fit for the district, which strongly leans Republican.
"Collin Peterson's focus starts with ag, ends with ag, and forget about the rest of the country," Hughes said. "There's this notion out there that if I were to beat him it would be this great loss to the ag community. He's not a bad person, but he's ineffective, and he's a bad fit for northwestern Minnesota."
He accused Peterson of voting against the Republican tax bill because Peterson's party opposed it. "He's beholden to (former Speaker) Nancy Pelosi," he said.
"This area is very Republican," and Peterson "has no relationship" with Republican state legislators, he said. "He has no relationship with President Trump. He's kind of an oddball out here."
He said Peterson was also following his party's leadership when he refused to negotiate with Republicans on the Ag Committee over their plans to raise the work requirements for SNAP (formerly food stamps) from the current age 18 to 49 to age 59.
Why should people in their 50s not have to work to enjoy the SNAP "welfare program," he asked.

In fact, Hughes said, "he called my side 'ideological zealots' for this modest work requirement. It seems to me he walked away from it for 'ideologically zealous' reasons."
Immigration reform is another big issue in western Minnesota, he said, criticizing Peterson for not supporting Republican immigration bills. "We have to build that wall," he said.
Hughes is optimistic about his chances in November. "I have a great team right now, I have a lot more money than last time, and I'm working actively to get Trump to western Minnesota to rally for me."
