Scholarship confusion leaves college tuition costs in limbo for some

Imagine starting college and not knowing how much you have to pay for tuition. That's happening right now for SUNY students across the state, because of delays and confusion surrounding the Excelsior Scholarship.

The first requirement to get the free tuition is that you have lived in New York for a full year before classes begin. Your family has to have a federal adjusted gross income of no more than $110,000. The student must take at least 30 credits each year.

If accepted, whatever isn't covered by grants and financial aid is supposed to be covered by the Excelsior Scholarship, up to $5,500. If you accept the Excelsior Scholarship, Excelsior , it has to be in New York.

Of course, classes started Monday, so students who are still waiting to see if they were accepted have to start paying their bills.

Higher Education Services Corp., the state office handling the Excelsior Scholarship, said they would have all the applications done by August 18. That deadline came and went without answers for some, so it was then pushed to the end of the month. NewsChannel 13 reached out to HESC Monday to see how many people are still waiting to hear back and why the process has been delayed. We have not heard back yet.
