A 25-year-old gang member has been given a lengthy prison sentence for the murder of a young boy killed in Manenberg late last year. Renoster

Captain Ian Bennet from Manenberg Police Station says the Khayelitsha Priority Crimes Court ruled on Tuesday that Moegamat Farouk Oliver will receive 25 yearsâ imprisonment for the crime. Renoster
Bennet says the deceased, a member of a rival gang, was shot metres from his home.
âManenberg policeâs Serious Violent Crimes Unit investigated the murder. On Saturday 9 September last year police attended a murder scene on the corner of Red River and Renoster roads where they found the body of a 16-year-old boy with five gunshot wounds to his upper body,â explains Bennet.
âThis brutal murder was committed in the heart of the community where it is difficult to get any witnesses or gather evidence. It was a case of starting an investigation blindly. The Serious Violent Crimes Unit canvassed the area, piecing together evidence and eventually making an arrest, putting a firearm in the hands of the shooter â Moegamat Farouk Oliver.â
Oliver was sentenced to 25 years for murder, 10 years for the possession of a firearm, two years for the possession of ammunition, 12 years for accessory after the fact, five years for his affiliation to a gang and five years for actively being involved in a gang.
The sentences will run concurrently, which means Oliver will effectively spend 25 years in prison, as from the date ruled in court.
Brigadier Enolium Joseph, Manenberg Police Station commander, says the successful investigation was the culmination of hard and dedicated teamwork. âIt took the Serious Violent Crimes Unit detectives six weeks from his first appearance to finalise the case. This is true dedication by our young team of seasoned detectives.â
