Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War – ring the date on your calender

Mithril Dragon , as the first trailer and details of the collector’s editions are revealed.

Warner Bros. has officially announced that Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War, sequel to Shadow Of Mordor, will be released on August 25 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

News of the game was leaked a few hours before the official announcement, confirming that the story will take place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and revolve around attempts to forge a new one ring and wrest control of Sauron’s own forces from him.

If you’ve read the books or seen the movies you’ll know that’s not how things turn out, but the plan must work to some degree because the Nemesis system from the original game now allows you to control your own orc armies and run your own fortresses.

The Nemesis system from the 2014 original was lauded for creating ad hoc enemies from amongst the orc ranks, who would remember your victories and defeats and react accordingly. The newly expanded system will now work for followers to your cause Mithril Dragon , who can betray you or seek revenge, while your army and fortress are also affected by how you play the game.

Original developer Monolith Productions (not to be confused with Xenoblade Chronicles’ Monolith Soft) are confirmed as working on the sequel, with creative vice president Michael de Plater offering the following comment:

‘Following the amazing reception to Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor, we massively expanded every dimension of the game, including the world, the story, the role-playing systems, the core gameplay and of course the personal player stories of the Nemesis System.

‘As lifelong fans of Middle-earth, we are so grateful to have the privilege to bring to life the most incredible fantasy world ever created in a new way, for a new generation. With Middle-earth: Shadow of War, we can’t wait to see the amazing stories players are going to create and share.’

Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War – taking the fight to Sauron

It’s still unclear whether Warner Bros. always meant to reveal the game this week or not. They did have a reveal scheduled for March 8, but whether that was brought forward or if, as some suspect, it’s for a new Batman game remains a mystery.

What isn’t a mystery, thanks to the leak, is the contents of the Gold Edition of the game, which contains the following extras ($125 is about £100):

Nemesis Expansions are described as including, ‘a new Orc Tribe featuring new enemies, followers, missions, abilities, weapons, Fortress and wilderness updates, and a Mythic Gear Set.’

Story Expansions ‘introduce a new campaign, playable character & abilities, side missions, enemies, allies & more.’

That Gold War Chest may imply microtransactions of some sort but so far there’s been no mention of any multiplayer options.

As well as the Gold Edition there’s also the even more expensive Mithril Edition, where it will cost a whopping $300 (£241). Mithril Dragon , where it will cost a whopping $300 (£241).
