London city council: Coun. Jared Zaifman taking steps to return to politics

Coun. Jared Zaifman is proposing his first policy in more than a half-year as he takes tentative steps toward returning to politics after a lengthy health-related leave.
Zaifman, 30, was in the midst of a strong rookie term representing southeast Ward 14 when, last spring, he suffered a concussion and started struggling with the after-effects following a taxing debate in late May.
He hasn’t attended a city council meeting in more than six months.
But Zaifman has added a last-minute item to Tuesday corporate services committee meeting, a step toward returning to his city council duties.
“I’ve been slowly getting back at it,” Zaifman said, adding he won’t attend the Tuesday committee debate or next week’s council meeting.
“Hopefully as the month goes on I’ll start testing the waters some more. (This) motion is part of my return-to-work process.”
Zaifman, the grandson of two Holocaust survivors, is asking his council colleagues to have city hall display banners acknowledging International Holocaust Remembrance Day from Jan. 23-27. It’ll be debated Tuesday afternoon.

Under the Municipal Act, an absence of three straight months makes a ward seat automatically vacant. But council gave Zaifman an unlimited extension – allowing him to stay away as long as needed without losing his council seat.
Deputy Mayor Paul Hubert, chair of the corporate services committee, is pleased to see Zaifman nearing a full return.
“He’s a really smart, young, valuable member of our council,” Hubert said. “And we need him.”
