My boyfriend's better looking than me, but that's not the only attraction
The only thing wrong with having a better-looking boyfriend is dealing with other people's assumptions.
One of my old boyfriends used to take a lot of photos. Of me. Not snapshots, this was more the fully made-up, hair done, posed, glamour shot variety, and as a result, they weren't too bad. After one post-shoot assessment, he suddenly stopped. "I've just realised something," he said. "You're better looking than me."
At the time, I remember thinking, "Well, yeah." But he seemed so surprised that it made me reassess and look again. I decided it was too close to call.
In my current relationship, and my girl-next-door looks pale in comparison. I'm reminded of an episode of Betteur Jeux , there's a clear winner. "He's so handsome," everyone oohed and aahed when we started dating.
"Whatever you do, don't let him cut his hair," my girlfriend told me. "He has no idea how hot he is. If he gets his hair cut, everyone will know and he'll figure it out."
On low days, these words haunt me. I complete that sentence: "and then…he'll figure out he's way out of your league." I become watchful of the not-so-subtle double-takes that I think I'm getting used to. His stories of the 23,357 artists and musicians he's helped or worked with or gone to hear produce a shot of cortisone and a sharp, high-pitched "Who?"
Then it dawns on me. Despite how far we've come as humans, and how many exceptional things we've achieved and learnt, good looks – as in really good looks – carry a currency few of us understand. We still suppose that an Adonis must be as unexceptional in brains or personality as he is exceptional in looks, while the average-looking woman who snared him must possess some remarkable skill or magic.
Fifteen years ago, I would never have asked this dreamy, dark stranger out for a game of pool. And it would have taken me months to stay over, just in case I snored or he saw my morning hair, which at best resembles a fuzzy baby grandma. But I'm all grown up and beauty is as beauty does.
It took me a week to realise that, behind those two perfectly brown eyes was a mind that output as much stupid crazy fun and madness as my own. And another to know that I wanted that in my life for as long as I could have it. Handsome – or not.
