The Nauset Interfaith Association deserves credit for organizing a program that offers refugee families a free three-day weekend on Cape Cod with volunteer host families. This summer, seven families from Liberia, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, all of whom now live in central Massachusetts, visited the Cape last weekend.
“All of these families are hardworking with little if any time or money for a vacation, and very few have an automobile,” said Ken Campbell, the interfaith association’s convener.
Special appreciation goes to the host families and the volunteers who drive vans provided by Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School in Harwich to pick up the families in central Massachusetts and bring them here. The weekend getaway is intended to “provide an enjoyable weekend for new Americans, all of whom (have) suffered terrible loss and suffering before their arrival in the USA,” Campbell said.
We hope this worthwhile program expands in coming years.
Sometimes, we just don't understand how the court system comes up with monetary awards for damages and penalties.
Last week, a jury in San Francisco awarded $289 million to a former school groundskeeper who said Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer left him dying of cancer. The verdict is likely to open the door for countless people who blame their suffering on the weed killer.
The state Superior Court jury agreed that Roundup contributed to 46-year old Dewayne Johnson’s cancer, and Monsanto should have provided a label warning of the potential health hazard.
Monsanto has denied a link between the active ingredient in Roundup - glyphosate - and cancer, saying hundreds of studies have established that glyphosate is safe.
“We are sympathetic to Mr. Johnson and his family,” said Scott Partridge, a Monsanto spokesman. “We will appeal this decision and continue to vigorously defend this product, which has a 40-year history of safe use and continues to be a vital, effective, and safe tool for farmers and others.”

The broadcast suggested that Denmark is an economic failure because of its high taxes and a lack of free-market incentives.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the U.S. is No. 20 in a ranking of national employment rates, while Denmark ranks eighth. When it comes to income equality, Denmark has the sixth-best distribution, while the U.S. is ranked seventh from the bottom, just above Turkey. In work-life balance, Denmark ranks second-highest in the OECD, while the U.S. ranks ninth from the bottom.
Regan was correct in saying that Denmark pays its citizens to study rather than charging tuition. But the country still has some of Europe’s lowest university dropout rates and performs better than nations charging their students. In the U.S., less than 60 percent of undergraduate students finished their studies within six years.
Once young Danes have successfully completed their courses, they can rely on universal access to health care and can move to Copenhagen - currently the world’s ninth most livable city. No U.S. city made it into the top 10 this year.
