Late last year, Paris-based French Bee announced it would fly Airbus A350s from Paris to Tahiti with a stopover in San Francisco.
That was such a good idea, that United copied it, and announced that it, too would offer Boeing 787 Dreamliner nonstops between SFO and Papeete, Tahiti's capital city, twice per week starting on October 30. Fares have been falling ever since.
Fares from the West Coast to Tahiti have long been prohibitively expensive-- usually in the $2,000 range for economy class. But French Bee's 3x per week flights started last month with fares in the $1,000 range.

And now that United's start date is getting closer, a fare war is starting to erupt among airlines with nonstop AND one-stop service.
But so far, it's not easy to find these low fares. They are not listed openly on airline sites. To see them, you have to dig deep on sites like
, Google Flights or Priceline. And you also have to be flexible on your travel dates. Or consider making a stop on LAX or Honolulu to find an even cheaper fare.
On Google Flights and/or Priceline, we've found fares as low a
on a handful of French Bee flights in June and July. Then they rise to around $1,000 during peak summer season (July-August), and begin to
United's flights crank up on October 30, and it's offering deep discounts, too. For example, we found United roundtrips for just
, which French Bee has matched or gone a few dollars cheaper-- we found fares as low as
As with most low-cost carriers, French Bee's cheapest "basic" fares charge for nearly every other amenity typically included in the fares of its full service competitors. Passengers can expect to pay for choosing a seat ($20), a meal ($25), checking a bag ($45 if done online two days before departure, or $95 at the airport), and priority boarding ($18). See the
United's fares, which run slightly higher, are not "basic economy" so the first checked bag is free, as are meals and seat selection.
These discount fares (with or without the fees) are great deals when you consider the distance between San Francisco and Tahiti is about 4,250 miles-- it's nearly twice as far away as Hawaii-- nine hours away.
This could be the start of a broader sale between the West Coast and Tahiti, so be sure to set up fare alerts on
, and keep an eye on fares if you've always had dreams of a South Seas vacation!
Have you been to Tahiti before? How was it? Do you dream about going there? Thoughts in the comments, please.
NOTE: Fares listed were available on Sunday, June 10 and subject to change.
