Auckland Summit off the calendar as AWS downsizes

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will scrap its flagship Auckland Summit in New Zealand, in favour of smaller and regionally focused events.

, meaning Sydney will now be the closest location for Kiwi partners, developers and customers - running from 10-12 April.
The closure of the main event in Auckland puts an end to AWS’ running of the conference, which ran for five years locally, attracting more than 2,000 users in 2017.
“Feedback from our customers and partners told us that the Auckland Summit played a key role for the past five years in educating, informing and inspiring them how to use AWS to allow them to retire technical debt and enable digital innovation,” AWS New Zealand country manager, Tim Dacombe-Bird, told
“But as their use of AWS strategically has grown, they have asked us to evolve how we provide educational programs, and in particular they want to hear from us more regularly and in more locations around New Zealand.”
As explained on the vendor’s website, AWS Summits are designed to “educate new customers” about the cloud platform, while offering existing customers "deep technical content to be more successful with AWS".
The full-day agenda offered at AWS Summit in Auckland suited and catered to technical and management-level roles involved in the planning, from various industries and businesses of all sizes. In 2017, the event was backed by a host of vendor and partners, involving over 25 sponsors across the full-day program, with
Rod Drury famously announcing Xero’s migration to AWS during the opening keynote in 2015.
“In the spirit of customer obsession we have amended the Summit program in 2018 to enable a series of smaller and more regionally focused events throughout the year,” Dacombe-Bird added.

“This kicked off last week with our first Learning Series event outlining our AI/ML capability and continues next week with our Developer Focused ‘Dev Lounge’ events – with great support from customer and partners in both Auckland and Wellington.”
The scrapping of the Auckland Summit also follows the cancellation of Ignite in 2017, the flagship technology conference ran by Microsoft for more than 20 years in New Zealand.
