Petition launched to secure future of Sandy Lane tip

AN online petition has been launched in a bid to secure the future of the Sandy Lane tip at Stockton Heath.

Neraly 400 people have already signed the petition created by local councillor Judith Wheeler.

She says Warrington Borough Council is considering the provision of waste services throughout the town and Sandy Lane is once again faced with possible closure.

Cllr Wheeler says it is important to secure the future of the recycling facility. Opening hours at Sandy Lane have already been reduced and any closure would mean residents of South Warrington being faced with journeys across the town, to recycle their rubbish.

“This only contributes to Warrington’s traffic congestion, something we wish to reduce,” she said.

She is urging people to sign petition to urge the Council to keep Sandy Lane open – or provide alternative recycling facilities in South Warrington.

A storm of protest erupted in June 2014 when a proposal was put forward to close Sandy Lane to save and estimated £450,000.

By the September the controlling group were accused of performing a “cheeky u-turn” over any closures while an affordable borough wide strategy could be developed.

This is absolutely ridiculous. There was a petition last time raised by locals and signed by a huge number of people along with a facebook group set up by residents anda whole host of other objections too regarding the proposed closure and support to keep it open…why the heck do we all have to go through it all again to prove to the council that YES our local tip is still well used, needed and surely has to stay OPEN.Goodness me it’s so blummin’ obvious…well to those of us who go there anyway and have done for many years and see how much it is used. The staff there are always so helpful and friendly too.

Surely in this day and age with the increase in fly-tipping closing a very well used and needed local tip (sorry recycling centre) will only lead to more fly tipping in the local area as not everyone will drive right across town to use Woolston or Gateworth. Prime location for flats and a wad of cash from the sale of the land to developers though eh WBC as I’m sure they will all be holding their wallets open to you for a prime location overlooking the waters of the Bridgewater and within walking distance of all the bars and eateries in Stockton Heath village that you have allowed over the years in your quest to make Stockton Heath a mini town with a raving night life lol
